Unlike a laptop board packed into a tight space, a desktop motherboard's larger form factor and socketed components (CPU, RAM, expansion cards) make targeted, chip-level repair genuinely practical in many cases. Rather than defaulting to a full board replacement, we read POST beep codes, inspect for visibly blown capacitors or failed VRM components, and test the BIOS chip before concluding a board swap is the only option.
Common signs to look out for
- No POST or display, with beep codes on startup
- Random restarts with no clear software cause
- USB or SATA ports suddenly not being detected
- A burning smell from the board itself
- Won't power on despite a confirmed-good PSU
